When I asked my family friends what being a Jew in Alabama is like today, they responded by telling me that there is no place they would rather live. Alabama has a Jewish population of less than 10, 000 people, half of which live in the Birmingham area. Despite the preconceived notions and prejudice that we think envelops Alabama, often times we are mistaken. The Jewish community that reside there are extremely vibrant members in both the business and philanthropic worlds.
This is a rather interesting time for the Jewish people as anti-Jewish sentiment is rampant around the world and in the United States. Alabama is known to be a superior and special case in regard to this attitude towards the Jews as Alabama has showed nothing but support toward the Jewish state. This pro-Israel sentiment is not only perpetuated by Jewish people but is also supported and vocalized by thousands of Christians throughout Alabama as well. Alabama's "senators and house members have supported Israel in its efforts to reach peace with its Palestinian neighbors. They have advocated for military aid to Israel as the United States' strongest ally in the region and have supported strategic cooperation that benefits both countries" (sweethomepolitics.com). The support that Alabama has showed for Israel is incredible and is often overlooked and goes unrecognized. Alabamians have truly come together to not only better their state but take steps toward a far more prosperous and inclusive future.
